He Says

Machi Machi man…I want to be a machi man.  Nothing to do with Macho Man, but the name somewhat resonates with the memorable Village People song.  Machi means small town or community.  This modern Japanese restaurant is situated in the touristy area of St. Kilda across from Mr. Wolf and a few doors down from Newmarket, which are other popular restaurant-and-bar-type places on the same street.  It’s also not far from the infamous Grey St., a centre for Prostitutes.

Being a Saturday night and gathering of 14 people, there was no doubt that having a booking was a must. It was one of our friend’s birthday dinner. The restaurant was filled by 8:00 pm including guests sitting at the bar. A cosy atmosphere with hanging lamps and dimmable down lights, it catered for couples to large groups.  We were the largest group sitting on a long, rectangular table taking up almost a fifth of the restaurant space, excluding the bar and kitchen. We were greeted and waited by polite Japanese (or at least Japanese-looking) staff. The menu featured a modern twist on typical Japanese dishes such as gyoza, sushi, salmon and wagyu beef. There was a lot of seafood, which we love and it was perfect for a special occasion like this birthday.

Here’s what we ordered:

baked scallops chilli garlic
pork gyoza
wagyu tataki pickled onion
free range chicken karaage green tea salt
seared salmon nigiri
slow cooked lamb soy
japanese fish ‘n chip tempura
miso baked barramundi
kari kari salmon curry 2
grilled wagyu beef donburi

ENTREE
Overall it was dericious. The pork Gyoza was a more salty than other gyozas I’ve had. Lightly fried with a crispy pastry skin, it was restaurant quality.

The wagyu tataki was raw and marinated which gave it a fresh, tender taste.

The chicken karaage had a great crunch and served with green salad.

SIGNATURE DISHES (main)

We tried all the signature dishes.
The slow cooked lamb was tender and fell off the bone.
The Japanese fish n chip tempura was divine. It came out with fried pumpkin, The batter was tasty and crispy,
